Getting started with aquascaping

I would like to know if anyone can lead me in the right direction in regards to aquascaping, I've been leaning towards starting a new hobby with gardening, however, I started looking into aquascaping once I saw the betta bulbs in my betta fish tank starting to grow.

I'm looking on expanding my fish tank and incorporating more fish, but more importantly, I would like to keep it simple so that I don't have to deal with over-filtration and waste.

I love the Japanese style of bonsai trees and ferns, it looks like a real landscape, but how does one go about creating something like this? is this a special type of plant, what sort of substrate is best? what is the minimum requirement to get started?

Thank you!

Thanks Cor. I have found the page quite resourceful
