Don't let pearling after a water change lead you into a false sense of security. There's lots of Co2 in tapwater, my glass starts pearling after a w/c :!:
Re: Show me your tidy cabinet! (Now piccies of my tidy cabi
"when it looks decent i'll get some shots of it all working."
So 15 months later, where are the shots???????
Thanks for doing the "leg work" for me Darrel, I've heard of Diana W's method but not read it. I'll check the others out too. Much appreciated
Thanks Ollie, I'll have a read of that one too when I get a moment.
Does anyone know of a decent journal for a low-tech aquarium? I know each set-up is different and I'm currently running a relatively algae free high-tech planted tank but feel that I'm neglecting the family on my only day off (Sunday) maintaining the tank.
I know the basics of the theory but...
I use Purigen instead. I know many others on here have also used it and I'm sure you'll get better explanations as to why from them. From what my addled brain remembers it has better water polishing properties, removes NO nutrients and if you do have to dose any medications for your critters...
Can anyone point me in the direction of a tutorial/journal of a large-ish (approx 4 footer) low tech set-up? I've done a search and not come up with much. :(
I'm currently running a 2 foot high tech and am encountering algae problems, I know this is due to too much light. I inject CO2, 2 hrs...
There's no need to ensure it's a real tight fit.
I got an off-cut from my local glaziers for a couple of quid (don't buy full sheets from DIY stores as they can be very expensive).
Score it both sides to required size with a sharp craft knife (using a straight edge) then just snap the waste...
Amazing! That's gotta be the end of this thread, nobody can beat that....... can they?
As samc said, would be nice to see a pic of the tank, just to get a perspective of what that's controlling!
Other option is Al-guy?
The al-jays are definitely an Americanism.
Are there different pronunciations for multiple types of algae and one for a singular type. i.e: al-gee plural and al-guy singular or versa visa :?:
OK while were on the topic, what's the general census of opinion of the pronunciation (yes pronunciation not pronounciation) of algae is it:
1) Al-gay
2) Al-gee
3) Al-jay
4) Al-jee
:?: :?:
And, yes I'm sure, most have you have never had to utter the word!
I didn't check my heater was properly replugged and therefore off or about a week, in a breeding tank of guppy and lots of fry. Thankfully they were all fine despite the temp plummeting to about 16/17c before I noticed.
Also done the "forgot to turn the heater off" and came back in the room to...
Anyone remember seeing a snap shot of Ed Seeley's setup a couple of months ago? I can't remember the thread it was on, but he did say something along the lines of he would post more detailed pics once he got it tidied up. He's got tons of equipment
Where are they now Ed?
Glenn and I are neighbours so can count as one delivery to (east) Leicestershire and we'll share the costs. I'm happy to reimburse UKAPS for the expence. Anyone else, locally, want to get involved or has the East Midlands been covered for a batch for delivery/collection/get together?
I don't...
I'm in, as previously posted:
"SimonD: 4 or 5 lengths 40 - 70cm combination of branched/straight."
On reflection I'll reduce this to 2 or 3 lengths. Big thanks to UKAPS for stumping up initial postage costs.
I
It's not a bunch of rocks or plants (hollistically) that gives this impression but the obsession of the exact placement of one rock or piece of wood that gives concern to some that aren't in the know!
Now I'm getting concerned which only leads me to one conclusion : I'm not in the know or I'm...
Sorry to hear about your latest problem.
I got an off-cut of perspex from my local glaziers for about £2.50 to cover a 60cm tank. It's easy to cut (just score on both sides with a craft or Stanley knife and snap off, then file corners and equipment access points to shape). I fitted a drawer...
Sorry, didn't read the original post well enough to realise you stated the water perameters
I've had "bad batches" of neons before and lost quite a few. Have you got any recourse with you're LFS? Do they give any guarantees on their livestock?
With regards to the other question (when...
As Sam says it's a very ineficcient CO2 source so in my opinion it's extremely unlikey to cause the deaths. I think you should be looking elsewhere for the problem. Have you tested the water?
Yes I'm a big fan, post submitted to PFK:
"I like them, but not if it's your only display tank.
I beleive that, to the untrained eye, they look a bit boring and a non-aquascaper or non-fishkeeper would not appreciate the work involved in acheiving the end result.
I personally have no...
Yep, pain.
If it looks like a long time problem (and assuming you've still got some hot water in your hot water tank) you could, if necessary put a plastic bottle of warm water in the tank to maintain temperature. Or pop round to me and borrow my generator and get everything going again :lol...
Light overspill is a consideration. Depending on where you are going to be putting the tank an overhead luminaire could be too bright in a living room (depending on size of room and positioning of tank in that room).
Having said that ,I've never gone for an open top tank with overhead lighting...
Lack of circulation can promote algae if nutrients and CO2 are not reaching all corners/areas of the tank (this will depend on the plants being used holistically).
As far as I know there is no negative problem with over circulation, depending on your fauna and their abilty to accept fast...
Excellent stuff.
I subscribe anyway but I'm really looking forward to this issue.
My main hope from this, is that the LFSs will realise that aquarists want more than fish, hardscape and plastic plants. Hopefully they will realise that we have moved on and can keep live plants, so many shops...
Yes Ed, beat me to it! Just what I was going to say.
Damn and blast (excuse my language), not many questions I can answer on this forum and even that wasn't going to be a definative answer.
I've only uttered the name once to someone who was talking about getting into planted aquaria. I beleive I said "you-caps" but then probably bored him silly and frightened him away!
The voices in my head always say "you-caps".
SAM, WHAT ARE YOU DOING??
Tell them there is no competition, there never was and there never will be. You're drastically reducing your and my chance of winning by helping them. lol
