What dry fish food do you use?

I use Tetra Prima on larger fish and i'm sure it enhances the colour. I've recently started using Wild Discus food from CE Fish Essentials after seeing them at Aquatics Live, they simply love it, as do the tetras which inhabit the same tank.

    After Altums

Hiya, David Lai at www.discusforthediscerning.com has some in, i'm collecting mine next week :D I know Tony Swinney had some off him last season and they are stunning! He lives in NW London but i'm sure he offers delivery.

    Help too much BioLoad

As Matt says, your tank is very heavily stocked, especially for only a 30% WC per week. The first thing i'd do in a tank that size is re-home the Bristle Nose, they are awfully messy. I would do 2 x 30% WC per week, waving your hand over the substrate to lift the debris into suspension, whilst...

Has anyone ever tried raising seasonal killi's?

I'm keeping Nothobranchius guentheri at the moment, 1 male and 2 females. I'm keeping them in about 4 inches of water in my paludarium along with my frogs. My water is almost pitch black as i've used peat as the substrate for the paludarium, i'm using 75% RO with 25% hard tap water. The PH is...

    Discus behaviour

Thats good news that you can re-home them. If that particular fish was bullied initially then he may or may not get bullied or be the bully. It's impossible to know. My only suggestion would be to buy fish that are of a similar size. Discus are Cichlids at the end of the day and they can be...

    Discus behaviour

I'd get another three. If you go to a breeder like David or Chen then you'll be able to choose fish of a similar size or smaller. How high is the fish that you currently have? They are normally sold in inches as opposed to years so it won't be hard to find it some companions. Id look to rehoming...

    Discus behaviour

I've kept 8 Red Covers from Discus Bananas before and they were pretty tough to acclimate but once they were used to the surroundings and uber lighting of the Solar 1 they chilled out, it took about 8-10 days. Does yours have any Discus tank mate? Discus are not happy on their own for long, for...

    Discus - Tap Water?

Yep :0) Bred them in it too  RO is much better though, i can see a marked difference in the Discus i've kept recently since getting an RO unit.
  11. Dan Crawford

    discus

I wouldn't stock just two unless you know they are a proven pair and even that can become pretty harrowing for the female. Discus are aggressive at the end of the day and like to be dominant so if you have just two, one can make the other's life a misery. The reason for stocking a group is to...

    discus

You'll be ok IMO. They love a water change so don't let that put you off.
  13. Dan Crawford

    Why mature tank?

Ammonia levels sore during the tank's cycle, ammonia burns the gills of a fish and subjecting fish to this is just barbaric, all for the sake of a couple of weeks.

    Whats the ultimate shoaling fish?

Emerald Eye Rasboras shoal better than almost any other fish i've seen, they are just the perfect shoalers and so understated, super cool 8)
  15. Dan Crawford

    Whats the ultimate shoaling fish?

Harlequins IMO not my favorite fish but the best shoalers i've seen.
  16. Dan Crawford

Fish are at the top of the tank.

Pop an airstone in there attached to an airpump whilst you slowly lower the CO2 over a few hours.

    sae's tail/fin damage.

Are you sure it's been nipped and not some sort of bacterial infection? Can you get a photo of it?
  18. Dan Crawford

    Nano fish

I don't think this is true mate, where did you hear that? I wouldn't go for any more than 12 really, 24 in a tank that size might look a bit crowded, it's personal preference though, i don't like to see too many fish

    Cherry Barbs & Stock Levels

I don't think he's asking for critique mate. IMO it looks great, I can't believe you havnt shown it off already?!

Breeding Celestial Pearl Danio (Danio margaritatus)

Whip um out mate, they don't do anything for the fry so there is only a chance of them eating the eggs and nothing to gain. Like you said, they're easy to catch anyway :D

    Buying mail-order fish

Defo, as you know, they are top quality!
  23. Dan Crawford

    Buying mail-order fish

I've had fish in the post a few times but never from wholesales coz you need a pet shop license to buy them. Posting fish in this weather could be tough even with the best heater packs.

    White spot?

Hi mate, if it were me i'd go out and buy some off the shelf treatment now. I've never had it but i've seen it before and heard it is a bugger to get rid of. Apparently the parasite lives in the substrate but can't survive without a host (fish) Make sure the treatment is free from copper, thats...

    Shrimp in a discus tank?

I've kept them before with 8-10cm discus and they were fine, i did have a panic when i thought that the discus were picking them off but it turned out to just be the sheeded shell of the shrimp   As with most fish, they won't attempt to swallow them whole, just peck away at them...

im worried about the angels behaviour

I had the same issues with some angels at work. I popped them in and they just sunk into the plants. I whipped them straight out and put them in a tank with no co2 and they recovered immediately. I turned of the co2 in the original and introduced them back again the following day and they were fine.

An interesting observation i noticed, in "router to wilderness" i never really saw my Ember tetras coz they had al lsorts of places to hide or whatever, i now have the same fish in my 100mm wide iwigumi and they are as bold as brass coming straight up to the surface for feeding and never trying...

    My "wild" type angels

    My "wild" type angels

Hi guys, I was on the hunt for wild angels and Jeremy Gay put me onto this breeder up in Manchester. A lovely chap who never had in what i wanted but promised to send me some whenever he got something that he thought was fitting. Well he emailed me and said he had something about right so i...

Thanks guys, I was hoping that they would see me as the feeder but they hide so much that the food just disappears into the plants and substrate so that is also a worry. Well, i'll see how it goes. Thanks again. Dan

    angels advice

The ones that i have received from a breeder in Manchester are on the button! I'd highly recommend them. He posts too so no need to travel and they were really well packed, poly box and quadruple bagged  I'll get some pictures up soon.

arowana... euwww. Would anyone pay £58000 for this fish?

I was thinking of a small arawana for my 1m iwigumi, short term of corse. I recon they are awesome!
  43. Dan Crawford

    When???

Once the nitrite and amonia have peaked and dropped back to 0 ish. The process will be shortened if the tank is heavily planted although if it's newly planted then i'd expect some initial die off whilst the plants adapt to their submerged conditions. Amonia will be leeched by the dying plants so...

Fantastic videos of tetras in their natural habitats!

    I'm off October 2009!
  45. Dan Crawford

    Just curious

I've not done a goldie planted tank coz i believe they eat most plants and they are messy so in a heavily planted tank maintenance would be a nightmare, just my thoughts. I have a L38 pekoltia in my tank and it was one of the biggest mistakes i've made so far, digging all around my wood to find...
  46. Dan Crawford

    bristlenose plec

Hiya, I have a L038 - Tiger Plec. It is a pecoltia and only gets to about 5 inches, it's about 3 inches at the mo and in my new tank he is decimating my HC and hairgrass. He also digs holes, he's actually dug so deep behind my wood that it has fallen backwards which resulted in a RUINED SCAPE...

    Pairing angels?

Sounds like a pair to me, congratulations! Get yourself a long tall piece of slate or a breeding cone and put that in there and see if they spawn on it, if they do then i would think about rehoming the other one, having said that 2 of the 3 discus that i have been keeping have been laying like...

    Discus FRY!

More eggs Hi guys, you might have guessed that the last eggs were unsucessfull (well you'd have known about it if they were sucessfull!) There were 3 unfertilised eggs in the clutch and they grew fungus which in turn infected the rest very quickly, the parents then ate the eggs. In time the...

Cheers mate, the last time all the cardinals ate the eggs! DOH! hard to tell, it had a stumpy vent popping out (you can just about see in the pic) but i'm sure the other one had one too so can't really tell. Some evidence says the blue would be the father but some says otherwise so i am pretty...

    Discus FRY!

Hello, well they are breeding again. I have more eggs, they have layed them on the scabbiest piece of wood in the world but they have layed them so that i can see which is great so here is a pic. The area of the tank that they have layed them in is in such a place where i might be able to put...

    Discus FRY!

Cheers mate, if i do set up another tank it will be purely for breeding those two and probably in my shed or at work maybe coz i have no room in my building site of a house so i don't want to put a lot of effort into setting up a nice tank for what might be a waste of time? I'm hoping if the...

Right, bad news! All the fry have been eaten. The parents we too busy fighting with the other 2 discus to notice that every time there back was turned a barrage of cardinals decended on the spawning site. I got one picture of a fry and i'd taken the shot ad was still lookin throught the view...

    Discus FRY!

The cost of the fish isn't nearly £30 if you go to a local breeder of which there are loads then you can get the highest quality fish youve ever seen for about £15! I use GB Discus in Kettering and they are great. The price obviously goes up with the fish size and if you wanted a full grown 8"...

    Discus FRY!

Hi guys, thers nothing to worry about i recon. I've kepth them for less than a year though so i don't have too much evidence of that but either way they must have been happy to have spawned. Hey hey, well as you may no the other week i had some discus eggs.......well now i have fry! That puts to bed the idea that you can't breed discus in anything but RO or HMA, i don't even declorinate my water (only coz i've ran out) let alone run it throuht countless prefilters and membranes...

Hi guys, as most of you know, i love to keep discus. Well, i was watching them the other day and they were clearly cleaning a new piece of wood that i had added to the tank. I watched them for about 2 hrs on and off (well i stared from the sofa!) and they layed a patch of eggs, about 50 ish. I...
