    dark green/blue algae

To my knowledge, neither of these contain Nitrates, I could be mistaken though....

    dark green/blue algae

A black out usually helps to cure the problem but be sure to buy some fertiliser which had Nitrates, Phosphates and Potassium in it, Tropica Plant Nutrition Plus is my recommendation. Your lighting seems fine to me.

Cyanobacteria, How do I get rid of it?

Hi, in my experience the plants actually do fine during the blackout with a strange explosion of growth! Blackouts are your best way to stop BGA so you need to decide whether you want to put up with it or subject your plants to a blackout, to me its a no-brainer. BGA doenst like flow IME so...

    Aquarium Plant Nursery Owner Woes

I agree with BunnySlippers, cut the plants at the substrate. By uprooting them often you will be getting massive amonia spike which result in the algae that you're seeing. I'm making this judgement on the basis that your substrate is not brand new. As Bunny says, if you have fast growing stems...

Eradicate algae altogether from the tank - Theory

I have to disagree somewhat. Clive has made it clear that nothing is algae free, Tropica could have told you that 40 years ago. What they are selling is plants that are not already covered in unsightly algae like you get in many retailers. They are not pretending to sell magic plants that won't...

    Algae issues (what's new?)

If i had this kind of algae id': 1: Make sure I knew how much CO2 is in the water and ensure that it's constant. 2: Double the water change frequency and change to 50%. 3: Ensure my lights were only on for a maximum of 8 hours. I hope this helps.

    help with tank 30l

Hiya, could you give us some stats for the tank please? it sounds like you have too few ferts, carbon source and filtration but it's hard to tell not knowing anything about your setup

    Algae/unwelcome guest ID

As Graeme said, I've seen it and had it, real sure it's a type of Riccia. Given it's dark colour I thought it was just dead Riccia, until it kept growing! TGM had it in their old Iwagumi and i believe it's almost impossible to get rid of in that kind of situation.

    BGA!!

BGA is the devil, fact, the devil i tell ya! It's supposed to be down to a lack of flow and Nitrates so upping your nitrates should help and pointing a powerhead at will also help. I'd syphon out what you can see too. Good luck!

    a few issues..

I've never gassed my fish overnight, i did have some issues when i had no light over the tank for about a week but IMO, thats to be expected and an error on my part. Once you've found the right balance, i find the whole environment more stable. Flow would be my only other thought on why you...

    a few issues..

Hiya Adam, have you tried running your CO2 24/7? When i used a solenoid i always struggled with BBA, once i ran 24/7 it never came back.... Surface movement is not a problem with sufficient CO2 and yours clearly is.

    Algae on Cyperus

Hi folks, i have algae on my Cyperus helferi, it's hair algae. The plant is in direct flow, constantly, all the usuals are ok and i'm dosing the full ADA range. I've just cut the plant off at the substrate and presumed it was lack of maintenance on my part. After a quick chat with Tonser on the...

    Well i'm stumped i'm afraid, sorry :(

    how to kill algae?

Could we have some more details please? Photoperiod Ferts CO2 etc This will give us a better chance in finding the cause, rather than just how to kill it...

Hi, have a read of this and it'll give you an idea of why we dose particular nutrients. http://www.ukaps.org/EI.htm

    Cloudy Water Conundrum

It sounds like a bacteria bloom, is it "white" clouding? Have you recently done some filter maintenance?

    BBA owns my tank

Do you intend to dose the whole thank long term? I don't believe it has any advantage other than it "may" kill BBA when spot dosed, it's certainly no replacement for Excel. Whilst i understand that you want to get rid of the BBA, we need to concentrate on why you have it in the first place. Can...

    BBA owns my tank

Hiya, BBA much like many other forms of algae is CO2 related, insufficient and fluctuating levels are generally the problem. Could you give us some more details please? What CO2 system are you using? What are the weights of each fertaliser you are dosing? What lighting are you using and its...

    Yet more algae...

When i say "waving" i mean just wave the flattener over the top of the substrate to lift up the particles into the water column. And yes, propper gravel vacing is discouraged when using AS.

    Yet more algae...

Hi Alistair, there seems to be quite a lot of detritus there, when was the last time you did a gravel vac? i know its tough in a planted tank so when i do my WC's i give the substrate a good "waving" with a UKaps gravel flattener which lifts all the detritus into suspension and then it's removed...

    Erythromycin for BGA treatment

You could have a drop in filter flow? have you given it an overhaul? Extra nitrates work well too, i know you've upped NO3 before, you could try that combined with good flow. A small powerhead may also help, directed so that flow was rushing past it but not directly hitting it?

    Erythromycin for BGA treatment

What have you done to try and rectify the cause mate?

    Don't BIN that Algae!

You should check out my iwigumi  Cultivating green algae should be easy, a great, sustainable method for for powering our vehicles, great stuff.

    Can't budge it!

Clive is right as always with regards to NO3 so my corse of action has been and will continue to be: add more KNO3 salts, (i can send you some if you don't have any) spot dose the effected BBA areas with excel in a pippet and do a water change on a small tank like that every day for a week, it...

Do I need to add more nitrate

What i did when i got BGA in the substrate at the glass was cover the the glass in black vinyl to a height just above the substrate line. This starves the BGA of light witch works/worked very well. At a guess Amano will plant just back from the glass to avoid the possibility of seeing the roots...

    Algae an unhealthy leaves

i believe your theory to be true. I think its because old, dying and struggling leaves release amonia which inevitably attracts algae. Also an older leave has had a longer time in which to attract algae. These are just my guesses and no doubt they'll be corrected

    Guide for algae?

poor Co2 could be classed as inconsistent Co2.

    surface scum

You could use "news print" (chip shop paper) for the surface scum but i would reccomend a good quality kitchen towel like "bounce" or somthing, NOT the cheap ones coz they can break up pretty quick and you don't want to be trying to sift out tiny bits of paper wizzing around your tank. :shock...
