That's exactly what I had been thinking. I had, while the tank first got established planted heavily and ran a photo period of 3. 5 hours on 4 off then a further 3.5 hours. I was managing to avoid any concerning algae but u think perhaps this photo period doesn't suit this plant so I changed it...
Hi guys, I've grown a lot of carpetting plants in the past but for some reason the interwebs won't answer my question should trim Brazilian Micro Sword?
Just to add, I've not trimmed it yet and my main motivation to do so is that newer leaves are coming in shorter than the older ones, plus I'm...
Hi guys, I recently bought a second hand Rio 180 that had been sitting in a garage for a couple of years. Got it all nicely cleaned, scaped and filled. However I then realised that there is limescale all over the glass giving a cloudy look to the tank. I've attacked it with scrubbers and razor...
I buy it off ebay, best to buy the 35% concentration, and dilute it down with water. Try to aim for 5% solution for dealing with algae. I use it just before a water change so there isn't too much of it in the water column.
eg:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Food-Grade-Hy ... 2ebb4df69c
Though, I...
Scrubbed it with a pipe brush, then left it overnight in about a 7% solution of H2O2, rinsed and used the pipe crush again. There was some amount of crud out of it! I believe others use a bleach solution. I just used H2O2 as I had some that I use to spot treat algae.
I did this yesterday, and...
Finally figured out my issue I think. The damned UP atomizer I was using wasn't funtioning correctly, and was spitting out huge bubbles, as it needed cleaning. I didn't realise this until I took a chance and replaced it with a spare I have. Now I have a nice mist again as opposed to something...
Certain areas of my HC continually end up on the surface of the tank, will the roots attach themselves to the substrate like many other plants? Also is it an idea to plant the HC 5-10mm below the substrate? When I planted, I left all leaves exposed, and put a few grains of substrate over to try...
The algae I believe was due to the last FE near running out. And caused by the fluctuation over a couple of days period. So you reckon reduce the lighting intensity, rather than perhaps turning the c02 on 2hrs before lights on? If the consensus is to reduce lighting, I can perhaps reduce it to...
Wow, great to see such a response! Sorry I haven't been on earlier, I work in IT, and am on night shift all week...
Just to clarify for everyone, I rescaped and put the new light on about 6 weeks ago.
My lighting scheme has been:
Weeks 1-2: 6.5hrs 2x24w with 2hr in the middle with 4x24w
Weeks...
Oh, sorry, the light is on tank brackets, and does have a reflector, previously I had no issues growing hairgrass, P Stellata, or Limnophila Aromatica in the tank when I just had 2x24w, now with 4x24w I figured HC would be a doddle...
The akadama I have would be the larger sized, 3-5mm grains. A few weeks back I further tweaked my scape, and thinking the grain size was an issue, I put a layer of tesco cat litter on which is a much smaller grain size. It is odd, I thought with lots of light, c02 and ferts it would take off...
Did a bit of a rescape about 6 weeks ago, and added 6 pots of HC. Some of the pots were melting, but soon bounced back and put out nice compact leaves. However to my eye, in the 6 weeks up to now there does not appear to be any amount of growth, perhaps a very small amount. I was hoping t have...
It's been my experience that fluctuations in a c02 injected system generally occur whenever the c02 cannister, or fire extinguisher is running out. As the pressure drops the amount of c02 entering the tank drops. I find this is the time I will get BBA, and will occur over a few days.
It's very...
Think I'm going to crack up! Just spent 2 hrs figuring out how to reduce 2" pvc pipe to 12mm barbed connectors, came up with:
4 50mm x 1" PVC Male Threaded Adaptor
2 50mm x 50mm PVC 90 degree Elbow
4 1" FBSP Multi Stage Hose Adaptor
Proceeded to checkout, and it turns out they don't...
Good to know Robbowal. And you manage to achieve 100% dissolved co2?
Does anyone know where I could buy the parts off the shelf? Plumbing centre have pvc pipe ok, but not the other parts it would seem.
Cheers Alastair, and kudos on your reactor build! It was your journal that has actually convinced me to have a go.
My thinking is that the weak point in a co2 reactor will always be the point that the co2 is fed from. And as I already have everything up and running, I figure it may be an easy...
Wil be building a co2 reactor soon, and mostly following the excellent write up by Ed Seeley in the pinned DIY projects. I currently feed co2 via a UP atomizer and fluval 405, and while excellent, I would like to get as close to 100% dissolved as possible. The constant fine mist is something I...
Always after a 50% water change I see much higher levels of pearling, plus if my normal co2 schedule is left on all fish are at the surface nearing the end of the lighting period which is not normally the case. This has always indicated to me that the water does contain dissolved co2, am I...
Sorry Nayr, missed your comment!
In the tanks I currently have, I change 50% water approx once a week, though sometimes more like every 5 or 6 days... I work shifts...
Stock wise, I currently have Peacock Gobies, Honey Gouramis, Ember Tetras, Celestial Pearl Danios, Sakura shrimp, MTS...
Cheers Gill, but not able to find any info on his set up asides from big tank, big fish, and no plants...
RudeDogg, I've thought about putting it through a HMA unit, but I've never use one and from what I can see you have to add a lot more to the water.
Morgan Freeman, night time water changes...
Yes, I figure I will probably have to overdose to achieve the same level of dissolved ferts in the tank. The water supply is pretty solid here, however you are right, I may come home to find brown water being added :o
We don't pay water rates here, so water supply is free! :D I figure I may as...
Hi all! I've been skulking about the forum for a quite some time now. I've always kept high tech tanks, and the articles, journals, and advice provided on ukaps really makes it the best planted tank site around imo.
I'm currently awaiting planning approval for a house I bought about 4 months...
Hey,
Last week I bought these:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/10-X-Plastic- ... 3cb54bac93
And I have to admit they are great. They dispense about 2.2ml per squirt, and suit my smaller tanks perfectly!
I see they do larger versions as well (up to 1L)

If you move the fish out of the tank to a seperate tank, you should have a decent amount of fry within 3 weeks. The biggest issue I found was that the parents ate the eggs and fry. The females scatter eggs pretty much constantly as far as I can tell, I had 2F 1M in a tank, and have ended up with...
I have come across a FE with a slightly smaller internal diameter than regular, so I was able to screw on the reg ok, but it didn't fully make a correct seal, and when fired I got hissing from the joint. I normally buy or have swapped 4 FE at a time, and have only ever got one like this. Your...
Quick update, I still haven't done any water changes, and have a further 6-8L of water to add to the tank. Fry are getting on great! Just did a quick count, and I could see 40! The largest ones are now about 10mm and resemble a miniture CPD. Smallest are probably 8mm and still look like...
I've been trying these ferts for the last week, and I must admit they certainly have improved the colouration of my plants, in particular my blyxa, which was previously a very light green nad looked washed out, has now gone a very vivid green. I'm surprised to see such dramatic changes in such a...
I would be paranoid about siphoning off any fry, so I don't do any water changes! I started with an 30L arc tank, loads of moss, and loads of stems. Idea being that the fry will be provided some food from the moss, and the stems will soak up any nutrients, so no need for water changes. I just...
About a month ago, I decided I wanted to start breeding from the 20 adult CPD I have in my 100l high tech tank, I selected 2 of the biggest females, and 1 male with good fin markings. I had a load of moss from a shrimp tank and some fast growing stems floating on top to soak up any nutrients, so...
Re: [IWAGUMI] Scree Evolution
Hey George, just wondering what quantity of the Tobi fert you are dosing for this tank? I've just read the full article in the link, and its extremely interesting. So I take it the idea is to dose that macro mix every other day, and do the trace in between, with...
I've used plantedtanks quite a few times now, and can highly recommend them. There prices are a fraction of any other e-tailer including ebay. Online time I had any issues, my order was backed up over a holiday period, and my Limnophila Aromatica arrived completely melted. However, when I...
